  4. Thursday On Hiatus

    Thursday Logo

Thursday announced that they will be going on an indefinite hiatus following their current tour plans. They’ll be doing one more tour in North America and Australia.

“look thrice, Imma Let you finish, but…”

“Despite the fantastic year that the band has enjoyed, creatively, things haven’t been as easy for us on a personal level.  Without diving into detail, it’s fair to say that this year has been an endless series of personal difficulties.  We haven’t had any falling out and are all still close.  I’m sure that we will continue to create, in some capacity, together.  We’ve talked about turning Thursday into something else: a non-profit, a band that only records sporadically, a collection of other projects… Underneath it all, the personal circumstances involved make it impossible to continue Thursday in the spirit that has made it special.  So, we stop.  For now, at least.”

  5. Thrice Hiatus

Thrice is not breaking up, but the band announced a planned hiatus after their upcoming spring tour. Vocalist, Dustin Kensrue, explained that the effects of touring for weeks at a time has become a strain on his family life, and while he maintains a strong relationship with his band members, he needs a break. His full statement is below.

Thrice is not breaking up.  If nothing has broken us up by now, I doubt anything ever could. However, we will be taking a break from being a full-time band, and the upcoming tour in the Spring will be the last one in the foreseeable future. Playing music for the past 13 years with Riley, Ed, and Teppei has been such a gift.  We have been able to see the world, share music with thousands and thousands of people, and make records with a variety of talented and inspiring people.  The four of us have been through many highs and lows and overcome them together.  I value their friendship, and it has been a great priviledge to play alongside them for so long.  They are truly an amazingly gifted group of people, and the ways we’ve grown together as people and musicians has been a joy to experience. Along the way we have adapted to many changing situations, especially the growing families of both Teppei and myself, but it has been harder and harder for me with each step.  I have three little girls now under the age of 5, and it is a huge strain on my family and I when I’m away for several weeks at a time.  The way we’ve been doing things for a while is simply not sustainable for me anymore. I don’t know what the future looks like for Thrice, or for any of us individually.  I do know that I would love to make more music in the future with them, as well as play some shows or short tours, but for the time being, I need to step out of the role of full time touring/recording musician, and will do so after this tour.  I will continue to make music in various capacities I’m sure, and continue in my work as a Worship Director at Mars Hill Church in Orange County. I know this will be very disappointing news to many people, and for that I am truly sorry.  The amount of support and love we’ve been given in our career is staggering and overwhelming.  I know I’m biased, but I think we have the best fans in the world. This upcoming tour should be a lot of fun.  We are planning for it to be somewhat of a celebration of the last 13 years and I’m sure we’ll be breaking out a bunch of songs that have been buried in the archives.  I hope to see you out there to celebrate with us. I never expected to be able to do any of this, let alone do it for 13 years, with such amazing bandmates, such gifted and hard working crew and management, and such incredible and loyal fans.  Thank you all.

  7. Review: Thrice/La Dispute/O’Brother/Moving Mountains @ The Mayan

The  Mayan is one of the most interesting venues in Los Angeles. Built more than 80 years ago, the inside of the building fits the name of the place perfectly. There are Mayan-esque designs carved into the walls and ceilings and you could easily expect a scene from an Indiana Jones film to break out at any moment- heart stealing and all. Even the Red Bull Energy Drink logo on one of the many available bars looked like a Mayan calendar with the two signature bulls in the foreground. This location made the mood for the night’s show even better.

The first band of the night was Moving Mountains. The majority of their set featured tracks from their latest album, Waves. In fact, the first few songs played are also the first on the record. Their style is similar to Thrice, with occasional screams, but an overall dark, ambient feel. Their last song of the night, “With One’s Heart in One’s Mouth” is an older track and caught the crowd’s attention much more. It’s a bit longer, at about five minutes, but brought their set to an exciting end.

During this tour, the opening acts took turns playing first or second. The next band to play was O’Brother. While I previously only heard a few tracks from their upcoming album, Garden Window, I figured I had their sound and style figured out. I was wrong. Their songs are fairly drawn-out, but heavy at the same time. They play a progressive, almost post-rock style and it seemed to appeal to Thrice’s fan base. Each song from their set list is so long that they only had time for about five songs before running out of time.

In my humble opinion, La Dispute was the highlight of the night. I’ve made plenty of comments on this blog already about my love for their new album, Wildlife, and they continue to amaze me live too. The group is tight. Everything sounds just like their records and you can see their intensity. Vocalist Jordan Dreyer is captivating, both because of his talent and because he constantly moves. He had a tendency of doing a two-step style move throughout the set and it just adds to the energy.

La Dispute with vocalist, Dreyer, in the crowd

When they played a track from their split 7” with Touche Amore (Searching for a Pulse/The Worth of the World), Dreyer claimed that the members of Touche Amore are “our best friends in the entire world” and proceeded to hint that they would be playing a surprise set with the band in the L.A. area on Sunday.  That’ll be a great show.

Their performance seemed to really captivate the audience, as it appeared many viewers had no previous knowledge of the group. Once they wrapped up their set, the crowd shouted for an encore, the first call for one of the night. It would have been great to see another song, but it was time for Thrice to take the stage. (setlist: a Departure, The Most Beautiful Bitter Fruit, New Storms For Older Lovers, Sad Prayers for Guilty Bodies, Harder Harmonies, Why it Scares Me, Andrea, You and I in Unison)

Thrice knows how to make their fans happy. This set proved that perfectly. The band played a wide variety of songs from their discography but focused on their two latest, Beggars and Major/Minor. Vocalist Dustin Kensrue announced that the tour was almost over, which meant the band was very dialed-in, but it also unfortunately meant that Kensrue was dealing with problems with his voice. He promised to do his best for the show despite even seeing a doctor earlier that day and any mistakes were unnoticeable. The sea of fans didn’t seem to notice anything wrong either.

After playing “Cold Cash and Colder Hearts,” Kensrue took a moment to discuss a charity that was present at the show too. Invisible Children works to stop the use of children soldiers in Africa. The non-profit organization passed around a large box for donations during Thrice’s next, mellower song. For more info on Invisible Children, click here

The last two songs of their set were “The Earth Will Shake,” which included auxiliary drumming from members of O’Brother, and “Anthology.”  The band then took a short break offstage and came back with two surprises for fans. They played “Phoenix Ignition,” from their first album, Identity Crisis. This surprised a die-hard fan of theirs who was with me at the concert. He said that despite seeing Thrice play more than 14 times over the years, the last time they included that song in a set was more than a few years ago. Following that was the heavy “To Awake and Avenge the Dead,” from The Illusion of Safety.

Thrice is one of those rare bands that can grow and mature as a band and maintain a devoted following. Fans left the building chanting that it was the “best Thrice show ever” and I heard no complaints. Pick up a copy of their latest record, Major/Minor, today
