Beneath the Trees is the type of EP that I wish had been a full length, because after just five songs, I’m not quite ready for it to end. On my first listen I was almost frustrated because in the opener, “Illustrated Girl”, the guitars were tearing up the track, and the drums were gluing it all together, but the lyrics seemed pedestrian. Then “All We Have” started up, and I realized I’d already made it past the “weak” point.
“All We Have” boasts a ridiculously catchy chorus and a beat you’ll be tapping along with long after you’ve pulled the headphones out of your ears. It’s definitely single material. Follow it up with “The Greatest Divide”, where you’ve got soaring vocals walking hand-in-hand with familiar alternative guitars, and you’ve got yourself an EP stacked with solid tunes.
Bringing up the tail end of Beneath the Trees is the blisteringly quick “Extra! Extra!”, and “Shining Light”, both of which make up for the opener with their well thought out lyrics and Pennington’s vocal prowess. All in all I’d label this a good start to what I can see becoming a successful career as a band.
